Windows Phone is now firmly entrenched as the No. 3 smartphone operating system worldwide, with its shipment volume nearly doubling last year.
But its overall market share still remains tiny.
That’s according to research firm IDC’s latest report, which shows Windows Phone shipment volume growing from 17.5 million in 2012 to 33.4 million in 2013.
Its market share grew from 2.4 percent to 3.3 percent.
Android’s market share jumped from 69 percent in 2012 to 78.6 percent in 2013 — not entirely a bad thing for Microsoft, given that Microsoft is likely making significant revenue off of royalties that Android manufacturers pay to the company to license its patents.
Apple’s iOS, on the other hand, declined in market share over the past year, from 18.7 percent to 15.2 percent.
Significantly, IDC warned that “hile smartphone market growth remained strong in 2013, it should be noted that the era of double-digit annual growth has only a few years remaining.”
