The MTN Long Term Evolution (LTE) network now covers 3 million South Africans with just under 1,000 LTE-enabled towers deployed in the country.
That’s the word from Krishna Chetty, general manager of radio planning and optimisation at MTN SA.
According to Chetty, MTN covers 99% of the South Africa population with 2G technology, and 75% with 3G technology. These statistics are derived from in-building penetration signal levels, Chetty said.
Chetty said that MTN will continue to roll out more sites, though he added they desperately need more frequency spectrum for their LTE deployment.
MTN will be investing billions of Rands in its network this year, Chetty said, saying that this year would probably see MTN investing in its network to the tune of R4-billion “again”.
