BlackBerry today pushed out a software update that turns its phones into an FM radio.
Blackberry 10.2.1 include hundreds of enhancements and refinements "that will make the things you do every day faster and easier," the company said, but most notably, owners of the BlackBerry Z30, Q10, or Q5 smartphones can unlock the built-in FM radio feature and listen to their favorite local stations without a network connection.
The update also includes BlackBerry Hub custom pinch gestures, SMS and email groups, actionable lock screen notifications, offline browser reading mode, a device and battery monitor, and automatic software updates, among other features.
A full list of OS updates is available online. BB10 OS version 10.2.1 is rolling out in the U.S., Europe, Canada, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, and Latin America, and will be available for the entire lineup of BB10 smartphones.
BlackBerry 10 was intended to be the Canadian phone maker's return to smartphone prominence, but an updated OS, shiny new phones, and 100,000-plus apps have not yet been enough to boost the company.
In December, CEO John Chen outlined "the way forward," talking up his "talented team of leaders" and insisting that the company remains the leader in mobile-device management, adding that the BBM messaging service is the most secure of its kind.
