During the Chinese New Year 2014, some 3.62 billion passenger trips will be made, and Baidu, the largest search engine in the country, made a map that visualizes the migration.The map was created with data generated via smartphones and using Baidu Maps, which has about 200 million registered users, according to Tech in Asia. Other apps were also noted.
The Baidu heat map, as it’s called, will update every few hours and shows the most popular destinations, travel routes, and places of origin.
The 3.62 billion trips are expected to be made during Chunyun, which is the 40-day travel period that has to do with the Chinese New Year. The travel period runs from Jan. 16 to Feb. 24 of this year, according to Shanghaiist.
According to Tech in Asia, the most popular places of destination are Beijing and Chongqing. The hub cities in Guangxi and Hunan are tied for third place.
Beijing also is the most popular city that people are leaving.
The trip between Chengdu and Beijing–both to and from–are the two most popular routes.
Most of the travelling is being done in the eastern half of the country, which reflects the population density of China
